Be part of Maxwell Laurent's Diabetes Journey

Hi,

My name is Ma. Cristina Suyom, aunt of Maxwell Laurent Suyom.

I would like to humbly request some financial aid to help my nephew to continue to his maintenance he needs with his battle with Type 1 Diabetes.

Background:

Last February 1, 2022, at 9 pm, my nephew, Sarah (his mom), and I went to a local hospital since he was having an on and off fever for 3 days already. Upon arrival, we were asked about his symptoms and laboratory examinations were immediately ordered. No one prepared us to hear that he was having Type 1 Diabetes, an incurable disease. We were given a referral to be admitted to a tertiary hospital since the local hospital we went to was not complete with facility and can't handle his case.

9:00 AM:
We are still looking for hospitals with available rooms, luckily, we found one in Pasig with the help of my aunt. We were immediately taken care of and Maxwell's laboratory exams were ordered again. By this time, he was already attached to an IV line to keep him hydrated cause he was not allowed to eat solid food and water intake for the next few days.

8:00 PM: He was transferred to Pediatrics Intensive Care Unit (PICU) for close monitoring since his random blood sugar was high (556mg/dl). He was left with his nurses and doctors as we, his family, were not allowed to be inside. I was shaking and crying for I felt bad for my 3-year-old nephew to be left with strangers and no one to hug, kiss, and comfort him if things get painful. A Series of laboratory exams were conducted. Every 4 hours, they will draw blood on him and every hour, they will prick his finger to check his blood sugar. I was told by his doctors and nurses that during those times, Maxwell was pretty behaved and strong. No crying moments from my little love. Good job, Love!

My nephew's doctor and nurses observed that he is frequently asleep than awake and alert so they talked to his mom and ordered a CT scan afraid that his brain might be swollen as an effect of his diabetes and medication. Upon learning it, I dropped everything that I was doing and went straight to the hospital. Thank GOD that the result turned out normal. Laboratory exams are still conducted every 4 hrs and random blood sugar testing every hour.

February 4 to 5 2022
He is still in ICU being monitored and is using oxygen to help him breathe comfortably. We are just comforted with the thought that he is being well taken care of and we were just outside the hospital waiting for him.

February 6 to 8, 2022
He is finally transferred to the pediatric ward. Thank GOD for another improvement! He is more stable and all his laboratory exam results came normal. We just have to monitor and manage his blood sugar level.

February 8, 2022
His pediatrician released an order to discharge already. We talked to her about the proper care, how to handle a diabetic patient and how we should prepare his meals since he will be on a strict diet. They also made sure that we have a glucometer available to use at the house. Luckily, the hospital bill was shouldered by Philhealth (Philippines Health Agency), the Social Welfare Department of the Hospital, and the Philippine Charity Sweepstake Office.

We are very hopeful that Maxwell and our family would be able to conquer this challenge together.

The biggest challenge we are currently facing is the cost of medication and equipment he will be needing during this fight. Since Type 1 Diabetes is an incurable disease, he will forever be insulin-dependent. Constant check-ups to make sure he is doing fine and the cost of the glucometer that he will use to monitor his blood sugar.

Novomix Insulin Pen Price (100 units) - Php 477 ($9.27)
Glucometer (one time purchase) - Php 1,795 ($34.90)
Freestyle Libre Starter Kit (reader is one time purchase as long as it is working) - Php 7,000 ($136.08)
Freestyle Libre Sensor (to be replaced every 15 days) - Php 3,500 ($68.04)

I do hope and pray that this update on what Maxwell and our family is going through will touch your hearts and help us with the financial burden we are currently experiencing. Kindly include Maxwell in your prayers.

Thank you and God Bless!

Ma. Cristina Suyom, aunt of Maxwell.
